The basic CCW curriculum includes both the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting and the NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home courses. These courses total 16-hours of training as required (between 12-16 hours) by the State of California. There is approximately 5 hours of live-fire, range time. Each of the two courses includes both a written and practical (live-fire) test to validate the student’s understanding and skill. Qualifying students will receive an NRA course completion certificate for each course.
These courses, when taught together, provide an introduction and stair-step progression to a comprehensive understanding of both the practical skills and knowledge required to competently and safely handle a handgun for self defense. NO PRIOR HANDGUN EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED TO TAKE THIS COURSE OR APPLY FOR A CCW LICENSE.
The NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home course includes a 1-hour lesson on the key provisions of California law pertaining to the purchase, transfer and possession of pistols, and the provisions and restrictions within the law pertaining to the use of deadly force in California. It also addresses both the potential criminal and civil legal actions that may be taken against the student subsequent to a defensive encounter. This lesson expounds on the Shasta County Office of the Sheriff’s requirements as well as the Penal Code sections referenced in the Shasta County CCW Permit/License application.
